Frequently asked questions

What is the penalty for filing late?

An automatic £100 penalty applies if your return is filed even one day late. Further penalties apply at 3 months (£10/day up to 90 days), 6 months (5% of tax due) and 12 months (further 5%).

Can I get an extension on the filing deadline?

HMRC does not routinely grant extensions for Self Assessment. In exceptional circumstances HMRC may consider a waiver of penalties — contact HMRC proactively if you are unable to file on time.
