Ledger Wallet Tax UK — HMRC Guide for 2025/26

A Ledger hardware wallet keeps your crypto under your own control — but HMRC's tax rules still apply to every disposal. This guide explains which Ledger transactions are taxable and how to build a complete transaction history for your UK tax return. Educational only — not tax advice.

Does using a Ledger wallet affect your UK tax?

The type of wallet you use does not change your UK tax position. Moving crypto from an exchange to your Ledger, or between your own Ledger addresses, is not a disposal. Sending crypto from your Ledger to sell on an exchange, swapping via a DEX connected to Ledger Live, or spending crypto are all potential disposal events.

Exporting your Ledger Live history

Open Ledger Live, select each account and go to the Transactions tab. You can export a CSV for each account separately. For DeFi interactions, you may also need to export from block explorers such as Etherscan.

Self-custody and missing cost basis

A common problem for Ledger users is losing the cost basis of crypto originally bought on an exchange and then transferred to cold storage. Always keep exchange records alongside your Ledger history so you can match each disposal back to its original cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is moving crypto to my Ledger a taxable event?

No — transferring crypto between your own wallets or addresses is generally not a disposal for UK CGT purposes. The original cost basis carries over.

What if I lost my Ledger transaction records?

On-chain transactions are permanent and recoverable. Use your wallet address on Etherscan, Blockchain.com or another block explorer to recover your full on-chain history.

Can CryptoTax UK import Ledger Live data?

Yes — export your Ledger Live transaction CSVs and upload via Import CSV (Premium). Combine with exchange exports for a complete picture of your taxable activity.
